A lower-cost alternative

The Open Source movement offers credible lower-cost alternatives to hitherto proprietary and more expensive IT solutions. There are many examples - Linux, Apache, and MySQL are industrial-strength and enterprise-ready alternatives for Windows and UNIX operating system, Web servers, and Database servers respectively. There are even open source alternatives for MS-Office. Products can usually be downloaded from the Internet, and deployed either with free-of-charge Open Source licenses such as the GNU General Public License or with a low-cost commercial license.
